Cranberry Hand Dyed Madder Root Handwoven Linen Scarf
Madder Root, an ancient dye stuff is considered an invasive species. The roots spread out rapidly and are thick with a wood like texture. It is the root that produces the colors ranging from orange to red to brown. The dye is sensitive to heat; 140 degrees F is the highest you can go with the dye bath because the colors will brown. For this scarf, I first dyed it in madder and then gave it a post iron bath which deepened the color to cranberry.
The fabric is a light weight handwoven linen. I had the linen scarves woven by fair trade artisans on handlooms in Bhubaneswar, India. It is very comfortable to wear and is washable. The shawl has a lovely drape. It’s a great summer shawl, for cruises, and wedding attire.
Dimensions: 68” long, 15” wide , not including the fringe.
